"Batizado de Capoeira"

It is the student "baptism", but is not a religious aspect of capoeira. More appropriately, it is agraduation ceremony that
began in the 1940's with Mestre
Mestre Bimba was inspired by the graduations from universities. This master revolutionized capoeira by bringing it back a lot of the fighting aspects of this martial art. At that time capoeira had become very folkloric, being more "danced" instead of fought, and also had been discredited and outlawed. By accepting in his studio only workers or students (no "vagabonds") and by developing a new training methodology Mestre Bimba brought new social organization as well as acceptance to capoeira. Therefore Mestre Bimba build the pillars for a new image of capoeira as a Brazilian national symbol. With Bimba, and socially accepted capoeira, came the idea of a "batizado," a ceremony to celebrate and recognize an achieved graduation level. From the 40's to 2013 the idea has grown from a simple ceremony and party to a rare opportunity to learn and exchange knowledge with other Masters and teachers invited to the event. The guests are, in general, special people in the capoeira world and, usually, good friends of the hosts. The coming together of all these people creates a great synergy. We, as the hosts of the event, try to bring these "capoeiristas" from all over the world as well as other parts of the US to teach workshops. Masters and guest teachers share their technique and skill to the students participating in workshops, but it is the wealth of knowledge shared during social time that is priceless: stories, music, and personal experience will be passed on...

Martial art, dance music, acrobatics, culture, history and traditions on every class.
Capoeira can be a sport, it is a traditionç a Brazilian art form developed by African slaves!
